Glossary of Electric Car & Hybrid Terms

Amp

BEV

EV

Amp

Short for ampere, a unit of measurement for electric current which indicated how fast an electric current flows for the purpose of EV charging.

BEV

Battery Electric Vehicle, 100% powered by battery.

EV

An abbreviation for Electric Vehicle, a vehicle powered entirely by electricity.

FCEV

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle, a vehicle powered by hydrogen, producing water vapor rather than tailpipe emissions.


HEV

ICE

KW

HEV

Hybrid Electric Vehicle, a vehicle that utilizes a small battery and an electric motor to enhance the efficiency and power of an internal combustion engine.

ICE

An abbreviation for Internal Combustion Engine, these are non-electrified motors powered by gasoline or diesel.

KW

An abbreviation for Kilowatt, the measurement of power put out by an EV’s batteries

Level 1 Charging

Charging via a standard 120-volt electrical outlet, charging 8-20 amps.


Level 2 Charging

Typically professionally installed units with faster charging times, up to 80 amps.

PHEV

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, a vehicle configured similarly to a typical hybrid, with a larger battery which can be charged via plug-in.

Regenerative Braking

The energy recovery system utilized in (most) electric vehicles. This technology allows the electric motor to be recharged during use, extending range and also assisting the driver to slow down/stop their vehicle.

Volts

The measurement of force pushing electrons through a circuit.


Watts

The basic measurement of electricity.

ZEV

Zero Emission Vehicle, any vehicle which emits no tailpipe emissions/pollutants from the power source.

In partnership with Chaffey High School’s Entrepreneurship program, students visited OAC where they learned about the latest EV and hybrid technologies. Students then created photos and videos in competition for a $2,500 scholarship courtesy of OAC!
