More and more people are taking to the road on bikes than ever before which is why it’s important for motorists to mind their manners when navigating around them. In this article, we give you some tips on how to drive safely around cyclists and motorbikes to bear in mind when you’re driving.

How to Drive Safely Around Cyclists and Motorcyclists

  1. Always be cautious when turning especially if there is a cyclist on the right side of the road. It is easy to not see a rider because of blind spots and so you should always check your mirrors before taking a turn.
  2. Take your time passing a cyclist in a car and give them plenty of room. Going too fast past someone on a bicycle or motorbike can cause them to lose balance which could make them have an accident. Reduce your speed and give them a wide berth when you’re navigating around them.
  3. If there are bike lanes, keep them clear for bikes as it makes for less congestion on the road. It’s easy to be tempted to stray into the bike lane, particularly if you just need to pull over “for a minute”. If there’s a zone dedicated to two-wheel transport, don’t drive your car on that section of the road.
  4. Giving bikers the right of way is always the safest option to take. This means they can take their time to navigate a junction or corner, without feeling pressurized to stop or move out of your way.
  5. Don’t assume that everyone on a bike knows what they’re doing. Just as other road vehicles can make maneuvers without warning, bikes can be as unpredictable, if not more. If a biker encounters a pothole or slippery patch in the road, they are likely to make a sudden swerve to avoid it. Driving too close won’t allow you to respond in good time.
  6. Always be vigilant for people on bikes, especially children as they may be harder to spot. Try and take into account that a child may not be as aware of their surroundings as an adult so they may not know how to be safe. If you look out for them and give way whenever you can, they are likely to be safer on the road.
