It probably goes without saying that you want to get the most out of every tank of gas. From saving money, to being good to the environment to simply reducing the time spent at the pump, there are a variety of benefits to maximizing your gas mileage.

Tips for Getting the Best Fuel Economy

Here are some tips to make sure your vehicle gets the best possible gas mileage:

Drive evenly
When you race off the line at the first sight of green or slam on the brakes to stop, you’re actually using more gas than necessary. Smooth starts and slows will help you make your tank last longer. In fact, abrupt starts and stops can use from 15 to 30 percent more gas, so even driving is key to getting good gas mileage.

Reduce weight
Is your trunk full of items that you’re not using? Seasonal sports equipment that lives in the back of your car all year or other heavy items can weigh down your vehicle. That extra weight can negatively affect your fuel economy. It’s estimated that for every 10 pounds of added weight, your mpg reduces by 1-2 percent. That weight can add up quickly, so take a look through your car and see if there’s any unnecessary items that can be unloaded including cargo and attachments such as unused bike racks, roof racks or even car body enhancements.

Tire pressure
Ensuring that your tires are properly inflated can also increase your fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires, not only being unsafe in general, can add resistance and make it harder for your car to move forward, causing you to give the vehicle more gas. Check your sidewalls, specs on the inside of your driver’s side door or your owner’s manual to find out the proper inflation number, and then check and fill your tires as necessary.

Reduce idle time
If you can, reduce the time your vehicle idles. If you’re making a quick stop, it might still be more efficient to shut your vehicle down and then restart it than to leave it idling. This is, of course, if it’s safe to do so. With summer heat here in San Bernardino County you might want to leave your AC on (which also decreases fuel economy), but as we approach cooler weather, consider parking in the shade and leaving your windows down if you’re going to be sitting for a while.

Stay up on regular maintenance
Keeping your vehicle in good working order all around can help you get the most of each gallon. When your vehicle isn’t operating at its best, it will need to use more fuel to perform at the levels you’re requiring. Things like staying on top of air filter changes, tire maintenance, fuel system maintenance and more will all have a positive effect on your fuel efficiency.

What are the Four Main Types of Transmissions?

Shopping for a new car can be so much fun! There might be some terminology being used, though, that has you wondering what type of transmission you’re getting with your purchase. Here’s a quick rundown of the four most common types of transmissions so that you can make an informed decision when making your next vehicle purchase.

Four Main Types of Transmissions

Automatic transmission
This is a common term with which you might already be familiar. An automatic transmission allows drivers to operate their vehicles without having to manually shift or use a clutch. The vehicle itself will switch gears for you, most often through six different speeds. It most likely uses a hydraulic system to switch gears which depends on pressurized fluid, pumps and a converter to guide the vehicle through different gears depending on the power being asked of the engine.

Manual transmission
Another common transmission, manual transmissions, are often used by drivers that want more control over their vehicle’s performance. A manual transmission allows drivers to use a clutch and gear shift to indicate when they want their vehicle to switch gears. Older vehicles typically had four speeds, but most of today’s trucks and sports cars offer five or six speeds.

Automated manual transmission (AMT)
This offers the benefits of both an automatic and manual transmission. Essentially, having an automated manual transmission means that the vehicle has a manual transmission, but that the car itself (through the computer) can shift for you. Autotrader notes that some of the perks of having an AMT are that you get to drive like an automatic without having to pay attention to RPMs or shifting, but you get the fuel economy and acceleration performance of a manual transmission. Some drawbacks include that the shifting can feel jerky/abrupt at low speeds just like in a regular manual. It depends a bit on make and model, so a test drive here will be very important in getting a feel for a vehicle with AMT.

Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
The newest transmission on our list, a continuously variable transmission, is also a form of automatic transmission, where the driver does not have to shift manually. The CTV has an unlimited number of gears due to its layout, where cone-shaped pulleys are moved with a chain or belt. This provides a smoother, more even shift, and allows the car to be more responsive to each individual’s driving style. J.D. Power shares that pros of the CTV are better fuel economy, responsive acceleration and smooth transitions, while cons can include some additional noise and higher repair costs.

What’s the right transmission for you?

All of these transmissions offer benefits and drawbacks, so it really boils down to your driving wants and driving style. For those that want a hands-on experience, the manual transmission could be the right fit. For shoppers looking for a more automated experience, an automatic, AMT or CTV would be best.

Fall Car Care Tips

Fall is here and we can’t wait for cooler weather, brown leaves, jack-o-lanterns and all the amazing food associated with the season! It’s also a great time to give your vehicle a once over to inspect some of the common items that might need attention as we roll into this time of year.

Vehicle Care for the Fall Season

Here are some vehicle care items that should be on your fall checklist:

Air filter
Your air filter is a vital part of keeping your car running well. It plays the heavy part of keeping dust and other debris from entering the engine. California has seen a lot of wildfires of late, and while they might not be directly in your area, smoke from wildfires can travel far and wide. Your air filter is a key component of keeping those contaminants out of your engine, so after the summer heat and wildfires, it’s a good idea to check and replace your air filter if needed.

Tires
The dry season is over, and we might be headed into some more rainy days as the year comes to a close. Check your tires and tread to ensure you have good grip even in inclement weather. Look for any abnormal wear not only on the tread, but on the sidewall. If you’re unsure if your tread depth is good, use the penny test. Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Wipers
Again, we might be seeing some wet weather rolling in with the fall season, so it’s vital that your wiper blades are in proper working order. For everyone’s safety you’ll want a clear view of the road in case of a drizzle or a more substantial downpour.

Defroster
Another safety item for cooler weather is confirming that your window defroster works. In SoCal this isn’t really a concern for daytime driving too often, but if you have to leave early in the morning or are coming home late at night, you won’t want a fog of water/frost hazing up your windows.

Lights
It’s going to start getting darker earlier and earlier. While your drive home from work may have previously been in the sunlight, you might find yourself driving home after dark sooner than expected. Make sure all your lights are working, including headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals.

The fall season is full of beautiful natural change, and sometimes that nature will get all over your car in the form of leaves, sap, dust and more. Ford Mustang Mach-E Wins Car and Driver’s 2021 EV of the Year

When you think about electric vehicles (EVs), you might not immediately think “Ford Mustang.” However, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has won Car and Driver’s 2021 EV of the Year, and we’re here for it! Dripping with style and with roots in American muscle, we love that the future of EV is being rallied in by this stylish and powerful model.

Ford is injecting some oomph into the EV market with their Mustang Mach-E, and Car and Driver notes that “if an automaker wanted to convert people from EV skeptics to EV evangelists, it’s hard to imagine a better vehicle for the job than the Ford Mustang Mach-E.” In their article naming the vehicle their pick, the publication reviews a variety of reasons why the Mach-E is standing out above what is becoming a crowded EV market. Here are a few of the reasons highlighted in Car and Driver’s article:

Great mileage

The Mach-E gets an EPA average of 270 miles on a full charge, and with more and more charging stations being installed across the nation through Electrify America, it’s become less of a hassle to find charging spots.

Power

Cranking out 346 horsepower and able to hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, drivers who love the get up and go of a gas engine won’t miss the power they expect from a vehicle like this in the EV version. The acceleration is there, and drivers won’t feel a delay when they put the pedal to the metal.

Handling

Great steering and more evenly distributed weight, the Mach-E is “surprisingly neutral if you push the speed in corners, and quick steering places the Mach-E exactly where you want it… the body stays flat and passengers remain upright as the car swings around bends,” which will make for a fantastic ride on our SoCal streets.

Aesthetic

Fresh exterior and interior design will make drivers proud to own this EV. A few nods to the Tesla can be found, specifically in the panoramic fixed-glass roof, door handles and center display. However, Ford has put their own spin on the design as well, and the exterior lines don’t disappoint.

Technology

The Mach-E comes with all the tech upgrades you’d want in a new vehicle. A couple that Car and Driver called out are the oversized, 15.5-inch touchscreen display and the simple instrument panel. They liked the interface and that the buttons were big enough to see and touch and that everything seemed to be laid out logically with a low learning curve for use.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5Coming Fall 2021

We don’t have an exact date yet, but Hyundai says the new 2022 IONIQ 5 will be available this fall! There’s a lot of buzz around this EV, and we can see why based on the information that’s available on Hyundai’s website and some of the early reviews coming out.

Hyundai has really pushed the envelope with the IONIQ 5. The model is only offered as an electric vehicle and showcases a futuristic design with all the tech upgrades and interior appointments you’ll want. It comes in three trim levels: Limited, SEL and SE. The model is so popular that reservations are currently closed, but we’re sure there will be plenty of opportunity to select your very own IONIQ 5once they arrive on the lot.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the available features.

Partnership with Electrify America
Electrify America is working to expand the U.S. charging network for electric vehicles. With the purchase of a new IONIQ 5, Hyundai is giving owners two years of complimentary 30-minute charging session access to the fast-charging network. Incredible!

Fast charging
The battery is 800 volts with 77.4k kWh and is capable of fast charging. This means that you can get an 80 percent charge in about 18 minutes. Driving range on a full battery is between 269 to 300 miles, so at 80 percent you can travel quite a distance, and charging won’t take hours.

Power
Depending on which power train you select, the IONIQ 5 will be cranking out 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque for the rear drive option, or 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque with the AWD. You’re looking at zero to 60 mph is 7.4 seconds or 5.2 seconds respectively.

Interior
A tech-centric display not only offers two screens but gives the interior dash a minimalist and clean vibe. There’s also plenty of space and legroom thanks to a flatter floor due to the lack of a gas powertrain. The rear seat can comfortably sit three, and there’s plenty of cargo space as well.

Tech
The IONIQ 5 has all the bells and whistles including driver-assistance technology, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, as well as voice recognition that lets you command the car by simply asking it to roll down windows, pop the trunk, turn on seat heaters and more.

What Should You Consider During a Test Drive?

Buying a car is a big purchase! For many, it will be their second biggest purchase ever (aside from a home), so you want to make the right decision. After combing over all your research and narrowing your list down, the test drive is where you get a better idea of what it would be like to own the vehicle. Before Your Test Drive

Before you arrive on the lot, you’ll want to know that the dealership has the vehicle you’re interested in testing. Call and schedule an appointment with a representative and let them know which vehicle you want to test. If you have more than one car that interests you, try to schedule your test drives on the same day so that you can compare the vehicles easily. Also, if you have any questions write down a list so that you remember to ask everything at your visit.

During Your Test Drive

Turn the car off and on, let it idle
When they pull the car up for you to drive, it will likely already be on. Go ahead and turn it off and then on again and let it idle. Listen and make sure everything sounds good.

Different traffic conditions
Try the vehicle out in different traffic conditions. Do you like the feel of it on the street in stop-and-go traffic? How about the highway, does it have the pickup you need to merge into oncoming traffic? Pay attention to how it handles in both situations, as well as if there are any unforeseen circumstances on the road such as construction, uneven roads or wet roads. This is where you can test the acceleration, braking, steering and suspension.

Park it
A huge part of driving your car will be parking it. Take it to a nearby lot and pull into and back out of a parking space. Do this next to another vehicle if possible so that you can see the performance in everyday situations. If you have to parallel park often, make sure to test that as well.

Comfort
Your comfort is important. Consider how the seat feels and ask yourself if this is good for your daily commute. What about a road trip? Is everything easy to reach and use? How was it to get in and out of the vehicle? What about the back seat?

Get a tour
The sales associate will be able to share all the vehicle’s features with you. Don’t feel like you are taking up too much of their time, that’s what they’re there for! Let them show you how the seats move, the tech features and anything else that might be of interest. It will be worth the time and you might find something you really like about the car that you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed.

Do You Hear That? Noises That Require Attention.

You’re driving along and then you hear it. An unfamiliar noise. Wait, is that coming from your vehicle? You turn the music down and listen carefully just to make sure. Yep, your ride is making a new noise. How do you know what needs immediate attention? Here are a few tips on identifying and assessing some of the common noises that you may hear come from your vehicle.

Noises That Require Attention

Click, click, clicking
Before you can even get going your car won’t start and there is a clicking noise every time you turn the key. This is likely a dead battery. You can try to jump start it with another vehicle or charge it with a generator, but if it keeps happening you’ll need to replace your battery.

Steering whine or growl
If you notice that noises come and go as you turn, this is a good indication that your power steering system may need some investigation. This could be as simple as adding power steering fluid to the reservoir, or you may need to check the system for leaks. You’ll want to do this ASAP as driving your car with a low or a leaky system could cause damage to your power steering pump.

Hissing or sizzling
If after a drive you notice a hissing or sizzling sound once you’re parked and your car is turned off, you might have a leak somewhere. This often is caused by the sound of fluid hitting hot engine parts, or the radiator overheating. Check under the car and see if you can see or identify any liquid dripping to help you know what you need to get checked out.

Squealing or grinding
If you apply the brakes and hear squealing or grinding, it’s time to get those checked out asap. Squealing could be part of an early indicator system on your brake pads that let you know it’s time to change them out. Grinding might be a sign that the pads are already worn out, and you’re damaging your rotors with metal on metal to stop, which isn’t safe and can cost a lot of money to repair depending on how long it’s been going on. Either way, it’s time to get your brakes checked out ASAP.

Banging or clunking
If you notice that your car has started to make a banging or clunking sound when you go over speed bumps or rough patches in the road, you might want to check out your shock absorbers/struts. If these are worn out, your vehicle won’t get the support it needs. This could also be a sign that your sway bar links, bushings or ball joints are getting worn or are loose.

These are some of the most common noises that you might hear coming from your vehicle. Any new and unknown noise should be investigated to make sure that your vehicle continues to be in good working order and is safe to drive.

If you want to be the tailgating host with the most, you’ll want your guests to feel at home. These days, this might mean charging their phones and you’ll want to provide some tunes or pre-game coverage. However, you don’t want to have a constant draw on your battery. Pack some pre-charged power bricks and a battery-powered radio. This way you can provide for your guests without worrying about draining your battery.

Make a plan
Investigate the conditions before you head out and make a plan. This could mean checking the weather, packing a pop-up tent for rain or shine coverage, extra chairs and even getting there early to snag a spot near the restrooms or picnic area. Whether you’re working out of your trunk or out of the bed of a truck, you’ll want to be able to easily locate tailgating items throughout your time there. Using clear drawers can help you and your guests effortlessly find what you need including plates, utensils, serveware and more.

Food safety
Keep food safety in mind and use multiple coolers to separate items. Raw meat should be in one cooler, while drinks and other items can be in another. If you have a truck with a cooler built in, use that for your drinks and put your raw meats in another cooler. You never want to put raw meat into a cooler with other items, as any leaks of raw meat juice could cause all your food to become inedible.

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order
Before packing up and heading out, make sure your vehicle is in good shape. The last thing you want is to have something go wrong on your way to your tailgate. Check your fluids, tires, give your car a once over under the hood and be sure you’re fueled up before heading out.

New Orleans Saints safety, Marcus Williams, hosted a free youth FUNdamental football camp this past June sponsored by Ontario Auto Center’s Citrus Motors. The camp was held in Eastvale Community Park, and welcomed local kids ages five through high school.

About the Camp

Williams is from the Inland Empire and wanted to give something back to the kids of this area. The camp teaches basic football skills in a fun and supportive environment. About 400 kids in total were able to attend the camp and learn about football basics. The camp has coaches and staff ranging from local sports leaders to professional coaches and players. For most kids, being coached by professional football staff is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Kids can participate in activities based on USA Football’s development model including drills on passing, footwork, catching and running. All drills are reimagined to be age appropriate, and the staff is onsite to make sure that kids have a great day.

In an interview with MUSE TV, Williams notes, “It’s a great feeling to have all these kids, and parents and family members show up. The community out here, it’s a lot of love… My heart feels so warm seeing everybody out here again.” When asked about the future of the camp, Marcus one day hopes to have his own facility where kids from all over can come and attend this special event. He added, “It’s going to get bigger and bigger each year.”

A digital display that allows drivers to customize what’s shown including speed, travel time, route guidance, assistance systems and more. The high-resolution screen gives a tech upgrade to a traditional-style instrument panel.

IQ.DRIVE®
This is VW’s Advanced Drivers Assistance Technology, which includes a safety bundle of “stop-and-go adaptive cruise control with semi-automated assistance, active blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, automatic forward-collision warning and emergency braking.” This is an add-on for entry models, but comes standard for the SEL.

2022 Subaru BRZ is Coming as Early as Fall 2021

Subaru is keeping it sporty with the new 2022 Subaru BRZ. An exterior redesign slightly elongates the body and lowers the car just a tad, making it look swift and ready to go off the line. With the new sculpting over the fenders and roofline, and you’ve got a car that looks as fun as it is to drive. The sports car has maintained its rear-wheel-drive layout and has some exciting new features.

Two Trim Levels for the Subaru BRZ

The 2022 BRZ comes in two trim levels, so depending on your preferences and budget, you can select the model that’s best for you.

Premium
This is the entry-level trim and still offers a ton of features. It comes with your choice of a six-speed manual transmission or automatic gearbox, an 8-inch infotainment system, a limited-slip differential and 17-inch wheels.

Limited
The Limited takes it up a notch. It also comes with a manual or automatic, and in this trim the automatic has a few more driver-assist features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane assist and automatic emergency braking. It also comes with larger, 18-inch wheels and upgraded tires.

Boxer engine
The BRZ will have Subaru’s new and larger engine that makes acceleration a breeze. While not turbocharged, this engine cranks out the power needed for that sports car vibe. It’s a direct-injection 2.4-liter flat four with 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

Track-tested suspension
When you’re on the road you want the smooth ride both on the straightaway and on the curve. The BRZ has retuned MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link rear suspension for top performance.

Technology
Both trim levels come with an 8-inch infotainment system, which will be compatible with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. There’s also a 7-inch digital gauge cluster which can be customized, including the tachometer which can follow a traditional round readout or be switched to track mode and show a graph of acceleration.

Safety
Both trim levels come with Subaru’s EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology with automatic Pre-Collision Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Chassis
The BRZ’s chassis has been redesigned to be more rigid, giving it a 50 percent increase in torsional stability. This will provide greater control and responsiveness. It also has a traction/stability control system with five settings, allowing drivers to select the level that they prefer, or change levels as needed.

Subaru Reveals New 2022 Outback Wilderness Anticipated This Summer

Are you ready to hit the trail in Subaru’s newest addition? The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness, the first of its line, has taken what off-roaders already loved about the Outback and turned up the volume. With everything geared toward outdoor adventure, the Wilderness is basically good to off-road straight from the lot, with Motortrend noting that Subaru “honed in on the most popular off-road mods its owners like to execute to offer them from dealerships along with a factory-backed warranty.”

Subaru has taken its love and commitment to the outdoors and poured that into this vehicle. So many of the features are geared for off-roading, here are just a few highlighted on the website:

More ground clearance
The Wilderness offers 9.5 inches of ground clearance and comes standard with a front skid plate and redesigned front and rear bumpers. All of these are meant to maximize the ability to avoid obstacles in the road and improve approach, break-over and departure angles.

X-MODE
X-MODE is Subaru’s off-road setting, and the Wilderness offers a Snow/Dirt mode as well as a Deep Snow/Mud mode. These settings help moderate wheelspin, minimizing it or allowing spin depending on the situation. This mode will also assess downhill slope and use brake settings to help regulate downhill speed.

BOXER engine< The Wilderness comes with Subaru’s direct-injection turbocharged BOXER engine. Drivers will get 260-horsepower with 277 pound-feet of torque and 3,500 pounds towing. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
New front and rear gear ratio provides improved low speed climbing with the ability to tackle up to a 40-percent grade.

Off-road tires standard
One of the most expensive parts of upgrading a standard vehicle to an off-road animal is upgrading the wheels and tires. The Most Common Dashboard Lights and What They Mean

Has this ever happened to you? You’re driving and you hear a ding come from your car, and then a light pops up on your dashboard. Some are obvious, maybe you’re cutting it a little close in filling up your tank, but for others it might be the first time you’re seeing them. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the more common dashboard warning lights just in case something comes up on the road.

Common Dashboard Warning Lights

Here’s a quick rundown of some dashboard lights and what they mean:

Tire pressure
This is used to indicate that the pressure in one or more of your tires is low. You’ll want to get off the road and check your tire pressure at a service station. Inspect tires for any visible damage such as nails or exposed belts, and if none are found, you can add air to the proper level indicated on the tire or inside your driver’s side door.

Engine temperature
Indicates that your engine is running hot, and you’ll want to pull off the road to allow the engine to cool down. You may want to check the coolant level, that the radiator cap is on securely, that no coolant is leaking and that the fan is working. Your car and fluids will be hot as the car has been running. Never remove the radiator cap while the coolant is hot, as it could splatter out and cause burns. It’s best to let the car cool down first before touching anything under the hood.

Battery charge
This light means that the battery is low on charge. This could be a sign that something is wrong with the battery, cables or perhaps the power systems such as the alternator which recharges the battery as you drive.

Oil pressure
A sign that the oil pressure is low. You’ll want to pull over and check the oil level with the dipstick and see if there are any visible leaks.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and braking system
This means that the sensors have detected an issue with your braking system. It’s obviously incredibly important that your brakes work, so getting this checked out by a professional ASAP is best.

Check engine
No one wants to see this pop up on their dashboard, and it could mean a variety of things. This could be something as easy as a sensor or could be a sign that something bigger is going on. A trip to your dealership is likely needed here, and you won’t want to wait long to get an answer.

Light the Way

Deciphering your dashboard lights doesn’t have to be difficult. When in doubt, you can look them up in your owner’s manual or take your vehicle in for service. If it’s safe, it’s always best to pull over or get off the road and see what’s going on before continuing to drive.

Why Wax Your Car, Even if it Isn’t Going to Rain

Southern Californians enjoy incredible weather. It hardly ever rains here, and in the summer months we’ve got bright sunshine from dusk to dawn. So, if the weather is so good, do you really need to wax your car? Even though it’s not raining, wax is still an important element of vehicle maintenance.

Wax The Big Deal

If you’re not familiar with wax, it’s a protective coat that goes on after you’ve cleaned your car. To properly apply, you’ll first want to give your car a thorough wash. If you’re applying it by hand with elbow grease, put the wax on by rubbing it over the painted surfaces in small, circular motions with the provided applicator or a microfiber cloth. Avoid your windows, mirrors and lights. If you plan to polish your car as well, do that in between the wash and the wax. You’ll want the wax to be the last step in your car care routine.

Cover the whole vehicle’s painted surfaces with wax and be sure that you apply it during cooler times of the day, and if it’s really hot outside, apply the wax while your car is in the shade. Then, you can use a microfiber cloth to remove the wax. The purpose of the wax is to protect the finish. There are many different types of wax, and you can pick which wax is best for your needs.

The Benefits of Waxing

Protects the paint and clear coat from the sun
Just because it’s not raining or snowing, doesn’t mean your car’s exterior finish is impervious to damage from the elements. The sun’s UV rays can be incredibly damaging to your paint and can penetrate through the clear coat and cause fading.

Minimizes micro scratches
Dust, dirt and debris from the road can get all over your vehicle while you’re driving around town. This can cause small, micro scratches that will eventually start to show or will allow these impurities to become embedded into your car’s paint. Wax acts as a protective layer to stop these small attackers.

Makes maintenance easier
If your car is waxed frequently, it can make washing and waxing easier with each subsequent application. Wax will make it easier to clean off things like bird droppings, sap and road dust. A well-maintained smooth surface is also easier to wax than one that has a lot of impurities.

It looks good
A car that’s waxed just looks better. You’ll have more pride in your ride if it looks good coming down the road. Not only that, but if your vehicle looks good, it can help the trade-in or resale value. No one wants to buy a car that needs to be repainted right away.

Wax On

Just because it isn’t raining, doesn’t mean your vehicle won’t benefit from being waxed. Depending on how your vehicle is stored, where it’s parked during the day and how often you drive it will determine how often you need to wax. The average is two to four times a year. With just those few applications, wax can provide some great protective benefits and keep your car’s paint looking shiny.

School is almost back in session, and as we start the new academic year there’s a lot to learn. This includes helping new drivers learn about basic car maintenance. There’s nothing quite like just getting your license and having that taste of freedom, but the new privilege of being able to drive yourself also comes with the responsibility of maintaining a vehicle.

Car Care Tips for New Drivers

Here are some tips to help new drivers take care of their vehicle:

Instrument panel
The instrument panel is your friend and can tell you a lot about how your car is doing. Not only does it house the speedometer, but it also can tell you how hot your car is running, how fast the engine is cranking, how much fuel you have left and more. Familiarize yourself with this important tool and keep an eye on it while you’re driving.

Dashboard lights
If one of the lights on your dashboard pops up, that’s a good indication that something needs your attention. You can learn about common dashboard warning lights and what they mean online or in your owner’s manual. If you’re unsure in the moment, it’s best to pull over to a safe area and investigate.

Tires
It’s a good idea to frequently check your tires to ensure that they are inflated to the proper pressure, are free from punctures and that the tread is at a safe level (try the penny test). For some vehicles you may need to rotate your tires every so often to keep wear even.

Fluids
Your car has a multitude of fluids including oil, brake, radiator, transmission, steering and windshield fluid. Keep track of your mileage and when each fluid should be changed or filled. Keeping these fluids in good condition and making sure each item is filled to the proper level will extend the life of your vehicle.

Fuel
This is a case where the most expensive isn’t always the best option. Each vehicle requires a specific type of fuel and putting premium into your older model sedan is not only a waste of money, but likely isn’t the best option for your car. Check the owner’s manual to confirm which level of octane fuel your car needs.

Lights
It’s important that all your lights are in good working order, including headlights, turn indicators, brake and running lights. Enlist a friend or family member to help you periodically check your lights by having you use each different type while they stand outside the vehicle and confirm all are working.

Wipers
Not just for rain! Wipers are a key component to safety and can help you in a variety of situations, including cleaning off unexpected obstructions to your view. You’ll want the wipers to be in good condition and don’t forget to check and fill the wiper fluid we mentioned above.

Emergency road kit
There are a variety of pre-made emergency road kits available and they often contain things like road flares, road signage, flashlights and more. It’s a good idea to keep one in your trunk just in case. If you never have to use it that’s wonderful, but you’ll be glad you have it if needed.

Overlanding has experienced a surge of popularity over the last year or so. As people start to investigate new ways to travel and unplug, interest in overlanding has increased. So, what is overlanding? Think about taking off-roading and camping to the next level. Overlanding is about the journey and sends people on faraway paths for some self-reliant exploration to remote destinations.

About Overlanding

Overlanding started back in the early 1900s in Australia, and originally was a way to develop trade routes across the challenging terrain. Today, the idea is to venture out on a longer quest that takes you completely off-grid. There’s no campground or restaurants when you’re overlanding. You pack everything you need into your vehicle and set out for paths unknown. This means you’ll be packing food, water, camping gear and even some supplies for vehicle repairs. You’ll likely be out of touch or with poor cell service in these remote areas, so you’ll need to depend on yourself and anyone on the adventure with you to keep your journey going and to have a successful trip.

Start Overlanding

Does this sound like something that’s up your alley? Fair warning: It’s not for the faint of heart and can be dangerous depending on the circumstances, so you’ll want to be prepared and do your research before heading out for your first expedition. You might also consider traveling with an experienced overlander before venturing out on your own. Here are a few things you’ll need to get started:

The right vehicle
You will absolutely want a 4WD vehicle, potentially with modifications for your overlanding journey. You won’t necessarily know what types of terrain you’ll come across, so you’ll want to be prepared for anything. This will likely mean upgraded tires with serious tread, raising your vehicle to give it more clearance and getting some sturdy gas containers to ensure you don’t run out of fuel on your adventure.

A place to rest
After a long day of exploration, you’ll want a place to have a good night’s sleep. Check out your options such as regular camping gear, sleeping inside your vehicle or getting a rooftop tent. You might even make your decision based on the areas and terrain in which you plan on exploring.

Time to eat
Make sure to get some top-notch cooking gear and food storage. There’s no refrigerator or restaurants where you’re going, so being diligent about food planning will be imperative.

First aid and tools
Overlanding is all about self-reliance and you’ll need to be able to patch yourself or your vehicle up if something goes awry. With that in mind, pack a fully-stocked first aid kit as well as a tool kit. Don’t forget important items like a socket set, pocketknife, Allen key set, a tire pressure gauge and even some zip ties which can come in handy. Some folks are even using portable solar panels to give power to devices without sucking power from your vehicle’s battery.

The History of the Hatchback

You may have heard the term hatchback used to describe a variety of vehicles with a rear door that pops up, but not all vehicles with that type of access are hatchbacks. A hatchback specifically refers to a sedan or coupe (four- or two-door) vehicle that has a tailgate that flips up from two hinges, frequently called a third or fifth door. They are often also called “two-box” cars, as the vehicle is broken up into two sections: the front section where the engine is housed, and the back section that is meant for passengers and cargo. These cars don’t have a defined trunk, or third area, so that’s where the “two-box” name comes from. Hatchbacks do not include vehicles such as wagons or SUVs, while those also have a rear door that flips up, they are considered different vehicle types.

The First Hatchback

Some assert that the 1938 Citroën Traction Avant 11CV Commerciale was the world’s first hatchback. Built to attract families and workers with cargo, the Citroën offered unique trunk access that had a split rear door where the bottom half folded down (like a truck tailgate) and the top half popped up from top-mounted hinges (as traditionally found on hatchbacks). Others argue that the half and half setup of the Citroën isn’t a true hatchback, and that the first hatchback design as we’ve come to know them today was the 1965 Renault 16. Also designed with families in mind, the Renault was positioned to be a modern alternative to larger sedans and wagons that was more affordable and more fuel-efficient.

Hot Hatches

The hatchback has come a long way, creating a huge following of drivers who love the look and functionality of this design. Here are a few “hot hatches” from over the years:

1968 Mustang GT-390 Fastback
American muscle-made hatchbacks cool with the Ford 1968 Mustang fastback. Little seating and small cargo space didn’t scream family vehicle as the original hatchbacks were intended, but 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds attracted a new crowd. Plus, Steve McQueen racing through San Francisco in a thrilling car chase in the movie “Bullitt” helped make this hatch hot.

1976 Golf GTI Mk1
The Volkswagen 1976 Golf GTI Mk1 was one of the earliest hatchbacks to capture the hearts of drivers. It was incredibly fast due to its lightweight construction, going 0-60mph in just nine seconds. Not only that, but the hatchback offered some serious cargo space, making it perfect for young drivers that wanted a quick car that could also be practical.

2002 Ford Focus RS
Ford had another fantastic hatchback option with the 2002 Ford Focus RS. It was sporty, with a turbocharged engine that could go from 0-60mph in just 6.3 seconds. Though never sold in the US, this vehicle had a lot to offer at an affordable price and helped secure the hatchback’s position in modern automotive history.

2021 Audi A5 Sportback
Hatchbacks have gone through a huge evolution and luxury brands are getting in on the hype. Style meets function in hatchback offerings like the 2021 Audi A5 Sportback. These vehicles offer all the creature comforts of a high-end maker but with some major cargo space and functionality.
