The electric vehicle (EV) has come a long way. Since the Toyota Prius Hybrid took the car world by storm in 1997, the evolution of electric vehicles has been exponential. Now, almost every maker has some sort of electric option. Whether you’re inspired to purchase an EV because of environmental reasons, or simply looking to save money on gas, an EV could be a fantastic option for your next vehicle purchase.

Should You Buy an EV?

Here are a few things to consider when determining if an EV is right for you:

Fully electric or hybrid
There are a few options when it comes to EV type, but you’ll likely be choosing between the two most common possibilities: battery electric or hybrid. With battery electric vehicles, you’ll need to plug the vehicle in to recharge the battery. There is no internal combustion engine here andno gas is used in this type of vehicle as power comes exclusively from the battery. Hybrids can come as a standard or plug-in. The standard (like the original Prius)has an internal combustion engine to help charge the battery or power the car if the battery runs out. A plug-in hybrid allows for the use of an internal combustion engine, but also the capability to plug in to charge the battery instead. A third option, which is less common,is the Fuel Cell EV which uses hydrogen for fuel.These are still making their way to the market. However, if a Fuel Cell is right for you, you’re in luck as they are most commonly found in California.

Desired range
One of the major things to consider when choosing an EV is the mileage range you need. Many EVs today offer around 200 miles per charge, which should be plenty for most drivers’ needs. Once you find an EV you like, take a look at your commute and regular schedule and see how many days you’ll get out of the range your potential EV offers. If you do more than 200 miles a day (or more than your EV’s range), make sure that there are appropriate charging stations on your route.

A place to charge
While being able to skip the pump is appealing for both the environment and your wallet, it’s important to make sure you’ll have a place to charge your vehicle for plug-in options. With standard Level 1 charging from a wall outlet, you’ll get about 4 miles of charge per hour. EV owners that go the plug-in route may want to consider installing a Level 2 charging station which kicks that number up to 25 miles per hour. Before purchase, confirm with an electrician that you will be able to install a Level 2 outlet outside your home, or alternatively that there is a convenient charging station nearby.

Performance
An EV will also give you a somewhat different driving experience than a gas-powered engine with a few advantages you might find appealing. You’ll find most EVs incredibly responsive when accelerating, and you won’t feel a jerk as the car shifts gears. Additionally, EVs are very quiet, so your ride will be tranquil with only the sound of the road and your surroundings (or your music/podcast).

Making a vehicle purchase is an important investment, so it’s understandable that you’d want to choose the right fit. An EV is a wonderful option as it offers some performance advantages while also being easy on the environment and lets you skip trips to the pump.

The Difference in Maintenance of an EV vs. Gas Vehicle

One of the most common questions we get at our dealerships when people are looking to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) is what the difference is inmaintaining an EV compared to a gas-powered vehicle. It makes sense, too, since most drivers know the basics of maintaining a car with an internal combustion engine, but very little about maintaining an EV, especially if they haven’t owned one before.

Maintaining an EV vs. Gas Vehicle

Oil changes
One of the biggest differences is that gas vehicles require oil changes and EVs do not. If you have a hybrid, you’ll obviously need to change the oil in the gas engine, but you’ll likely be able to go longer between changes than fully gas-powered vehicles.Since the power in an EV comes from the battery, which is a closed system, the regular maintenance of an oil change is not necessary.

Fewer moving parts
EVs have fewer moving parts than vehicles with internal combustion engines. Just think about all the components of an engine and exhaust system that have the potential to get worn out or break over the lifetime of the vehicle. With an EV, all of that is replaced with a battery. Now, it is true that batteries may need to be replaced, but for the most part EV batteries tend to last longer than the average life of the vehicle and prices continue to fall as manufacturing batteries becomes more common and sophisticated.

Tires
One of the major maintenance items for a vehicle are its tires. For both gas and EV vehicles, this maintenance will be the same. You’ll still need to check your tire pressure and when tread runs low, you’ll need to replace your tires.

Other similarities
Many other maintenance items will be the same. For both EV and gas vehicles you’ll want to properly maintain the exterior of your vehicle to prolong the life of the paint. You’ll also find both types of vehicles need to maintain their electric systems, lights, wiper blades, cooling system, transmission, brakes, suspension and other items.

Fuel
One of the biggest maintenance differences is fueling the vehicles. Internal combustion engines require gas, and EVs require a charge. It’s estimated that it’s more cost effective to charge a vehicle than it is to fuel up at the pump. Car and Driver found that on average with their sample set, it was about 45 percent cheaper to charge an EV than it was to fuel up with gas.

The Big Picture of EV vs. Gas Maintenance

Overall it was found that while EVs generally have a higher purchase price, they cost less to maintain. A recent study found that drivers of EVs can, on average, can expect to save $6,000-$10,000 over the life of a vehicle on maintenance costs when compared to a gas-powered vehicle.

Buying an EV Can Reduce Your Commute Time

Southern California is known for a lot of things. Sunshine, palm trees, great sightseeing and even the ability to be at the beach and in the mountains on the same day. Another thing we are known for, unfortunately, is terrible traffic. If you dread your morning commute you’re not alone. Sitting in your car inching along on the freeway is a terrible way to start and end your day. Reducing Your Commute with an EV

Take advantage of HOV lanes

Many freeways in California offer High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. Better known as the carpool lane, vehicles with more than one occupant can enter the lane and use it to bypass the gridlock. This is especially appealing during high-traffic times such as common commuting hours as it can cut quite a bit of time and frustration off your drive, reducing your commute. The motivation of these lanes is to reduce road congestion and protect the environment by trying to get fewer cars on the road through carpooling. However, carpooling isn’t the only way to access these lanes. A Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) with only a single driver can also access the HOV lanes. The reason being that these vehicles also protect the environment with reduced or net-zero emissions.

Get your decal

A qualifying EV that meets the DMV’s emissions requirements to be registered as a CAV will be able to apply for a decal to access the HOV lane with only a single driver. You can check a list of eligible vehicles on the California Air Resources Board website. If your EV qualifies, you can submit an application to the DMV to receive your decal. Once you receive your decal, you can then access the HOV lane with only a single driver, reducing your commute time by giving you access to a lane that generally moves more quickly than the standard pace of traffic.

Get a prime parking spot

Not only will you be able to access special lanes for your commute, but many offices, buildings and shopping areas are starting to offer reserved parking for low emissions vehicles or charging stations reserved for EVs. These spaces are generally at the front of the parking area and are often open as there are still fewer EVs on the road. This means you’ll be able to pull directly into a spot and not have to drive up aisle after aisle looking for a space.

2022 Tax Incentives for EV Purchases in California

There are lots of reasons to purchase an electric vehicle (EV). Not only are EVs better for the environment because they don’t use gas, which is a fossil fuel, but charging up the battery can be more affordable than filling up your tank. There are some performance advantages to EVs as well, including almost immediate acceleration and a super quiet ride. One of the biggest reasons to purchase an EV, however, are the tax incentives.

Tax Incentives for EV Purchase in CA

A long list

There’s a long list of potential incentives, and some of them depend on the type of vehicle you choose and for what you are using the vehicle. For example, there are incentives for both private or company use, as well as some that are county or city specific. You’ll want to do some research to make sure that you take advantage of all eligible tax incentives and rebates. Your dealership should be able to help you identify for which incentives you qualify.

CVRP

One of the most known offers is California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) which gives rebates for zero-emission vehicles. Right now, the incentive is up to $7,000 for the purchase or lease of qualifying vehicles including electric, plug-in hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles. This incentive is available until the funding is depleted. It’s easy to apply for this rebate as the application and all necessary documents can be submitted online. Once reviewed and it’s determined that you qualify, you’ll receive a rebate check.

Clean Fuel Reward Program

The Clean Fuel Reward Program provided by the California Air Resources Board provides up to $750 for qualifying new vehicle purchases or leases. The $750 is applied to the purchase price from participating dealerships of EVs with a battery capacity greater than 5 kWh.

More tax incentives coming

New legislation is being reviewed that would boost the federal $7,500 incentive up to potentially $12,500. This would be a result of President Biden’s Build Back Better bill. The legislation would maintain the $4,000 for the base tax credit, plus there would be $3,500 for vehicles with a battery that is at least 40 kWh. Another $4,500 will be provided for EVs made in the U.S. with union labor and $500 for a U.S.-made battery. Another change is that currently the tax credit is nonrefundable (meaning is goes toward your taxes owed, but you don’t get a check) but it would turn into a refundable tax credit (meaning the government would issue you a check). Some other qualifications apply, and your dealership will be able to help you navigate any new tax incentive legislation if/when it is passed.

Tax Incentives Make EV Purchase Attractive

California’s tax incentives for EV purchase make owning an electric vehicle even more appealing. When you include environmental, fuel and other benefits of owning an EV, tax incentives just add to the total package that an EV offers. Plus, with potentially larger tax incentives on the way for 2022, there’s no time like the present to consider an EV purchase.

Three Months or 3,000 Miles?

How Often Do You Actually Need an Oil Change?

You may have heard that you need to change your oil every three months or 3,000 miles, but is that true? The answer is: It depends! Some older vehicles, or vehicles that are driven particularly hard, will benefit from keeping to this schedule. However, most modern vehicles that receive regular or light use don’t need oil changes this often. So, how do you know when to change your oil? Give these tips a look and visit Ontario Auto Center for all of your vehicle repair needs in San Bernardino, California.

Modern-Day Oil Change Guidelines

Most modern-day vehicles don’t need to have their oil changed every three months or 3,000 miles. Unless your vehicle is being run particularly hard with long, daily commutes, severe stop-and-go conditions or towing heavy loads, you probably won’t need to stick to this schedule. In fact, most vehicles today use some type of synthetic or synthetic blend oil which is designed to last longer. For a blend you might be able to go up to 7,500 miles before a change, and with full synthetic and optimal driving conditions, it might be up to 15,000 miles.

Additionally, almost all vehicles today come with an oil life monitor that tracks oil wear and delivers a dashboard warning when your oil life is coming to an end. So, you probably don’t even really need to be keeping track of the timing, because the car will help you make sure that the oil is in good condition and alert you when it’s time for a change. That being said, if you want to track oil wear yourself, you can do that easily by simply checking your oil monthly or when filling your tank.

Check Your Oil

One of the easiest ways to keep track of your oil change needs is to check your oil yourself. You can use the dipstick to assess oil wear and decide from there if you need to head to the service center. To check your oil, make sure your car is turned off, cool and sitting on level ground. Then, you want to pop your hood and locate the dipstick. It will often be a small loop at the end of a tube, sometimes it will be yellow or black and say “Oil” on it.

Pull the dipstick out of the tube and wipe it clean with a rag. Then, put it back into the tube and pull it out again for a fresh reading. Notice the level. There will be markings on the dipstick toward the bottom that indicate a low or full oil level. As long as the oil comes between those marks, you’re good on your level. If it’s near or under the low, you should add some oil to your engine. Also, check the consistency and color. It should be between a caramel or very dark brown color. If the oil is frothy, extra light in color or has small bits of material or metal in it, that’s an indication that something is wrong, and you’ll want to go to a service center for assistance.

While the three months/3,000 miles rule might be outdated for most vehicles and driving conditions, it’s still a good idea to keep an eye on your vehicle’s oil wear. Oil Weights and What They Mean

Oil is what keeps your engine going, but many of us don’t understand what the various weights mean and when you should use them. Not only is keeping up on your oil changes important, but using the right type of oil for your vehicle and driving conditions is also integral to the proper operation of your vehicle.

The Role of Oil in Your Engine

Before we start diving into oil weights, it’s good to know what oil does for your vehicle. Oil plays a vital role in keeping your engine running smoothly. Your engine is full of quickly moving parts, and all of that metal-on-metal rubbing can take its toll if there isn’t proper lubrication. Oil prevents your engine from overheating as well as creates a barrier between the parts so that they don’t scrape up against each other and wear out or get damaged.

Oil Weights Explained

Oil weights indicate the viscosity of the bottle of oil and tell us how the oil will perform under various conditions. Oil weights are established by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which has set parameters for the classification of oil based on typical engine temperatures. Most engines operate at 210 degrees Fahrenheit, so the weights are based on performance at this temperature.

You may see oil weights as just one number, or most likely, you’ll see a multigrade oil rating which gives a winter and standard viscosity. A couple examples of multigrade oil weights are 5W-20 or 10W-30. Let’s take 10W-30 as an example. This means that in cold weather, not typical here in Ontario, California, the oil acts as a 10-weight oil at start-up. It’s a bit thinner allowing it to spread and move more easily between parts at cooler temperatures. As the engine and oil heat up, it will act as a 30-weight oil, becoming a bit thicker and standing up better to the hot conditions of the engine.

What oil should you use?
Your vehicle’s manufacturer will make a recommendation for the type of oil you should use which will be a conventional or a synthetic oil. Conventional oil starts with a petroleum base and uses additives to allow for multigrade performance. These oils work well, but tend to get “used up” more quickly than synthetic oils, meaning that you’ll likely have to have more frequent oil changes to keep your engine in good running order. Synthetic oils are man-made and multigrade options are designed for that specific performance, without the use of additives. They just simply are multigrade. Most newer cars are manufactured to use synthetic oil as it generally functions better and lasts longer, leading to the need for fewer oil changes for standard use while also offering the best protection.

Oil Weight Clarified
Now that you know the role of oil in your vehicle, and how the weights are assigned, you can understand a bit more about how your engine works and why it needs proper lubrication. The best course of action is to keep an eye on your engine’s oil change light, check your oil on a regular basis with the dipstick and then use the manufacturer’s weight recommendation for any oil changes.

How to Maximize Your Gas Mileage

It probably goes without saying that you want to get the most out of every tank of gas. From saving money, to being good to the environment to simply reducing the time spent at the pump, there are a variety of benefits to maximizing your gas mileage.

Tips for Getting the Best Fuel Economy

Here are some tips to make sure your vehicle gets the best possible gas mileage:

Drive evenly
When you race off the line at the first sight of green or slam on the brakes to stop, you’re actually using more gas than necessary. Smooth starts and slows will help you make your tank last longer. In fact, abrupt starts and stops can use from 15 to 30 percent more gas, so even driving is key to getting good gas mileage.

Reduce weight
Is your trunk full of items that you’re not using? Seasonal sports equipment that lives in the back of your car all year or other heavy items can weigh down your vehicle. That extra weight can negatively affect your fuel economy. It’s estimated that for every 10 pounds of added weight, your mpg reduces by 1-2 percent. That weight can add up quickly, so take a look through your car and see if there’s any unnecessary items that can be unloaded including cargo and attachments such as unused bike racks, roof racks or even car body enhancements.

Tire pressure
Ensuring that your tires are properly inflated can also increase your fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires, not only being unsafe in general, can add resistance and make it harder for your car to move forward, causing you to give the vehicle more gas. Check your sidewalls, specs on the inside of your driver’s side door or your owner’s manual to find out the proper inflation number, and then check and fill your tires as necessary.

Reduce idle time
If you can, reduce the time your vehicle idles. If you’re making a quick stop, it might still be more efficient to shut your vehicle down and then restart it than to leave it idling. This is, of course, if it’s safe to do so. With summer heat here in San Bernardino County you might want to leave your AC on (which also decreases fuel economy), but as we approach cooler weather, consider parking in the shade and leaving your windows down if you’re going to be sitting for a while.

Stay up on regular maintenance
Keeping your vehicle in good working order all around can help you get the most of each gallon. When your vehicle isn’t operating at its best, it will need to use more fuel to perform at the levels you’re requiring. Things like staying on top of air filter changes, tire maintenance, fuel system maintenance and more will all have a positive effect on your fuel efficiency.

The type of tire you need depends a lot on where you live. Here in Ontario or elsewhere in Southern California you may want different tires for standard street and highway driving than you would for mountain, snow or off-road driving. Differences in the types of rubber used, tread depth, tread pattern and even something called biting edges (which help to provide traction on ice) are designed into specific tires. These special condition tires might cost more but are certainly worth the expense if you’re traveling under anything but normal road conditions.

Your tires also affect the type of gas mileage your vehicle will get. Tires that have excellent tread, increase performance and handling, and are properly maintained and inflated can improve your gas mileage. What are the Four Main Types of Transmissions?

Shopping for a new car can be so much fun! There might be some terminology being used, though, that has you wondering what type of transmission you’re getting with your purchase. Here’s a quick rundown of the four most common types of transmissions so that you can make an informed decision when making your next vehicle purchase.

Four Main Types of Transmissions

Automatic transmission
This is a common term with which you might already be familiar. An automatic transmission allows drivers to operate their vehicles without having to manually shift or use a clutch. The vehicle itself will switch gears for you, most often through six different speeds. It most likely uses a hydraulic system to switch gears which depends on pressurized fluid, pumps and a converter to guide the vehicle through different gears depending on the power being asked of the engine.

Manual transmission
Another common transmission, manual transmissions, are often used by drivers that want more control over their vehicle’s performance. A manual transmission allows drivers to use a clutch and gear shift to indicate when they want their vehicle to switch gears. Older vehicles typically had four speeds, but most of today’s trucks and sports cars offer five or six speeds.

Automated manual transmission (AMT)
This offers the benefits of both an automatic and manual transmission. Essentially, having an automated manual transmission means that the vehicle has a manual transmission, but that the car itself (through the computer) can shift for you. Autotrader notes that some of the perks of having an AMT are that you get to drive like an automatic without having to pay attention to RPMs or shifting, but you get the fuel economy and acceleration performance of a manual transmission. Some drawbacks include that the shifting can feel jerky/abrupt at low speeds just like in a regular manual. It depends a bit on make and model, so a test drive here will be very important in getting a feel for a vehicle with AMT.

Continuously variable transmission (CVT)
The newest transmission on our list, a continuously variable transmission, is also a form of automatic transmission, where the driver does not have to shift manually. The CTV has an unlimited number of gears due to its layout, where cone-shaped pulleys are moved with a chain or belt. This provides a smoother, more even shift, and allows the car to be more responsive to each individual’s driving style. J.D. Power shares that pros of the CTV are better fuel economy, responsive acceleration and smooth transitions, while cons can include some additional noise and higher repair costs.

What’s the right transmission for you?

All of these transmissions offer benefits and drawbacks, so it really boils down to your driving wants and driving style. For those that want a hands-on experience, the manual transmission could be the right fit. For shoppers looking for a more automated experience, an automatic, AMT or CTV would be best.

It isn’t safe
Some things can break, and you can choose not to repair them to save money. For example, the radio in your older vehicle might give out. No big deal, right? You can play tunes from your phone. However, if the item that’s breaking is key to the proper function and safety of your vehicle you need to set your car out to pasture.

You can’t get parts
Manufacturers won’t make replacement parts for all vehicles forever. If you or your mechanic are having a hard time locating replacement parts, or it takes weeks to get something in that is compatible, the situation isn’t going to get better. The older the car gets, the harder and more expensive it will be to get replacement parts.

Lifestyle changes
As much as you want your little two-door hatch to accommodate your current lifestyle, it might not be possible. If your older vehicle simply doesn’t fit your new career or family needs, you might have to say goodbye and trade up to something that makes your life easier.

Fall Car Care Tips

Fall is here and we can’t wait for cooler weather, brown leaves, jack-o-lanterns and all the amazing food associated with the season! It’s also a great time to give your vehicle a once over to inspect some of the common items that might need attention as we roll into this time of year.

Vehicle Care for the Fall Season

Here are some vehicle care items that should be on your fall checklist:

Air filter
Your air filter is a vital part of keeping your car running well. It plays the heavy part of keeping dust and other debris from entering the engine. California has seen a lot of wildfires of late, and while they might not be directly in your area, smoke from wildfires can travel far and wide. Your air filter is a key component of keeping those contaminants out of your engine, so after the summer heat and wildfires, it’s a good idea to check and replace your air filter if needed.

Tires
The dry season is over, and we might be headed into some more rainy days as the year comes to a close. Check your tires and tread to ensure you have good grip even in inclement weather. Look for any abnormal wear not only on the tread, but on the sidewall. If you’re unsure if your tread depth is good, use the penny test. Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated.

Wipers
Again, we might be seeing some wet weather rolling in with the fall season, so it’s vital that your wiper blades are in proper working order. For everyone’s safety you’ll want a clear view of the road in case of a drizzle or a more substantial downpour.

Defroster
Another safety item for cooler weather is confirming that your window defroster works. In SoCal this isn’t really a concern for daytime driving too often, but if you have to leave early in the morning or are coming home late at night, you won’t want a fog of water/frost hazing up your windows.

Lights
It’s going to start getting darker earlier and earlier. While your drive home from work may have previously been in the sunlight, you might find yourself driving home after dark sooner than expected. Make sure all your lights are working, including headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals.

Wash and wax
The fall season is full of beautiful natural change, and sometimes that nature will get all over your car in the form of leaves, sap, dust and more. Ford Mustang Mach-E Wins Car and Driver’s 2021 EV of the Year

When you think about electric vehicles (EVs), you might not immediately think “Ford Mustang.” However, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has won Car and Driver’s 2021 EV of the Year, and we’re here for it! Dripping with style and with roots in American muscle, we love that the future of EV is being rallied in by this stylish and powerful model.

Ford Mustang Mach-E is EV of the Future

Ford is injecting some oomph into the EV market with their Mustang Mach-E, and Car and Driver notes that “if an automaker wanted to convert people from EV skeptics to EV evangelists, it’s hard to imagine a better vehicle for the job than the Ford Mustang Mach-E.” In their article naming the vehicle their pick, the publication reviews a variety of reasons why the Mach-E is standing out above what is becoming a crowded EV market. Here are a few of the reasons highlighted in Car and Driver’s article:

Great mileage

The Mach-E gets an EPA average of 270 miles on a full charge, and with more and more charging stations being installed across the nation through Electrify America, it’s become less of a hassle to find charging spots.

Power

Cranking out 346 horsepower and able to hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, drivers who love the get up and go of a gas engine won’t miss the power they expect from a vehicle like this in the EV version. The acceleration is there, and drivers won’t feel a delay when they put the pedal to the metal.

Handling

Great steering and more evenly distributed weight, the Mach-E is “surprisingly neutral if you push the speed in corners, and quick steering places the Mach-E exactly where you want it… the body stays flat and passengers remain upright as the car swings around bends,” which will make for a fantastic ride on our SoCal streets.

Aesthetic

Fresh exterior and interior design will make drivers proud to own this EV. A few nods to the Tesla can be found, specifically in the panoramic fixed-glass roof, door handles and center display. However, Ford has put their own spin on the design as well, and the exterior lines don’t disappoint.

Technology

The Mach-E comes with all the tech upgrades you’d want in a new vehicle. A couple that Car and Driver called out are the oversized, 15.5-inch touchscreen display and the simple instrument panel. They liked the interface and that the buttons were big enough to see and touch and that everything seemed to be laid out logically with a low learning curve for use.

2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5Coming Fall 2021

We don’t have an exact date yet, but Hyundai says the new 2022 IONIQ 5 will be available this fall! There’s a lot of buzz around this EV, and we can see why based on the information that’s available on Hyundai’s website and some of the early reviews coming out.

Hyundai has really pushed the envelope with the IONIQ 5. The model is only offered as an electric vehicle and showcases a futuristic design with all the tech upgrades and interior appointments you’ll want. It comes in three trim levels: Limited, SEL and SE. The model is so popular that reservations are currently closed, but we’re sure there will be plenty of opportunity to select your very own IONIQ 5once they arrive on the lot.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the available features.

Partnership with Electrify America
Electrify America is working to expand the U.S. charging network for electric vehicles. With the purchase of a new IONIQ 5, Hyundai is giving owners two years of complimentary 30-minute charging session access to the fast-charging network. Incredible!

Fast charging
The battery is 800 volts with 77.4k kWh and is capable of fast charging. This means that you can get an 80 percent charge in about 18 minutes. Driving range on a full battery is between 269 to 300 miles, so at 80 percent you can travel quite a distance, and charging won’t take hours.

Power
Depending on which power train you select, the IONIQ 5 will be cranking out 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque for the rear drive option, or 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque with the AWD. You’re looking at zero to 60 mph is 7.4 seconds or 5.2 seconds respectively.

Interior
A tech-centric display not only offers two screens but gives the interior dash a minimalist and clean vibe. There’s also plenty of space and legroom thanks to a flatter floor due to the lack of a gas powertrain. The rear seat can comfortably sit three, and there’s plenty of cargo space as well.

Tech
The IONIQ 5 has all the bells and whistles including driver-assistance technology, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, as well as voice recognition that lets you command the car by simply asking it to roll down windows, pop the trunk, turn on seat heaters and more.

What Should You Consider During a Test Drive?

Buying a car is a big purchase! For many, it will be their second biggest purchase ever (aside from a home), so you want to make the right decision. After combing over all your research and narrowing your list down, the test drive is where you get a better idea of what it would be like to own the vehicle. Before Your Test Drive

Before you arrive on the lot, you’ll want to know that the dealership has the vehicle you’re interested in testing. Call and schedule an appointment with a representative and let them know which vehicle you want to test. If you have more than one car that interests you, try to schedule your test drives on the same day so that you can compare the vehicles easily. Also, if you have any questions write down a list so that you remember to ask everything at your visit.

During Your Test Drive

Turn the car off and on, let it idle
When they pull the car up for you to drive, it will likely already be on. Go ahead and turn it off and then on again and let it idle. Listen and make sure everything sounds good.

Different traffic conditions
Try the vehicle out in different traffic conditions. Do you like the feel of it on the street in stop-and-go traffic? How about the highway, does it have the pickup you need to merge into oncoming traffic? Pay attention to how it handles in both situations, as well as if there are any unforeseen circumstances on the road such as construction, uneven roads or wet roads. This is where you can test the acceleration, braking, steering and suspension.

Park it
A huge part of driving your car will be parking it. Take it to a nearby lot and pull into and back out of a parking space. Do this next to another vehicle if possible so that you can see the performance in everyday situations. If you have to parallel park often, make sure to test that as well.

Comfort
Your comfort is important. Consider how the seat feels and ask yourself if this is good for your daily commute. What about a road trip? Is everything easy to reach and use? How was it to get in and out of the vehicle? What about the back seat?

Get a tour
The sales associate will be able to share all the vehicle’s features with you. Don’t feel like you are taking up too much of their time, that’s what they’re there for! Let them show you how the seats move, the tech features and anything else that might be of interest. It will be worth the time and you might find something you really like about the car that you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed.
