There’s a lot more to tires than you might expect. Tires can significantly affect the ride of your vehicle and can provide needed support in a variety of driving conditions. It’s important to equip your vehicle with tires that fit your lifestyle.  

Tires That Fit Your Lifestyle 

Here are a few different tire options to consider depending on your location and driving style: 

All-season

If you’re doing typical SoCal driving these are probably a good option. An all-season tire is good for paved roads and mild to warm temperatures. These will make your commute easy and be able to handle the minimal rain we get in this area. All-season tires tend to have good tread wear, so if you’re driving under normal conditions, you should be happy with this type of tire. This is the perfect tire for cars like the Honda Civic or Nissan Altima. 

Performance

If you’ve invested in a performance vehicle, you’ll likely want to get performance tires. In fact, tires that don’t meet the needs of a performance vehicle can negatively impact handling and overall operation. Performance tires tend to be a bit softer for better grip on the road, so this means that tread wear rating might not be as high as an all-season, but they are what a performance vehicle needs for a proper driving experience.  Put these on your Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint or your BMW Z4. 

Touring

Touring tires offer the smoothest ride available. They are great for luxury sedans and SUVs when owners want a quiet and responsive driving experience. Most touring tires are also all-season, so they would be good for regular SoCal driving. This type of tire would be ideal on vehicles like the Lexus RX 350L. 

Winter

Winter/snow tires are needed if you live in cold climates or enjoy travel to colder locales. Winter tires are designed to handle snow, slush and ice, so it makes for a much nicer and safer trip if you’re headed to colder weather. That being said, these tires aren’t good for warmer temperatures, so you’ll need to switch them out once the seasons change or you head back to SoCal. Nevertheless, winter tires are a safety must if you’re going to be driving in below zero temps. If they’ve had little wear and you plan on keeping your vehicle you can always hold onto them for next season. Swap these out on your Jeep Wrangler next time you’re headed for the slopes. 

All-terrain

If you’re a weekend warrior and like to head out for some off roading in your free time, all-terrain tires could be a good option. These are designed to handle unpaved roads such as dirt, gravel and rocks. These can be used for regular driving as well, but it might be a bit rougher and noisier ride than an all-season. Shopping for an EV can be a bit bewildering if you’re new to the terminology used to describe the electric vehicle (EV) ownership experience. Here are some terms you might want to know before you shop for your EV. 

EV Terms You Should Know 

AER (all-electric range)

The range (mileage) that the vehicle can reach only using the battery power.    

Battery management system

An electronic system that helps manage that battery’s power, monitors its status, confirms safe operating conditions and updates the owner via the dash control panel.      

EV (electric vehicle)

Any vehicle that uses a battery as part of or completely for power.    

HEV (hybrid electric vehicle)

An electric vehicle that uses both a battery and gas for power. Usually the internal combustion engine (ICE) is used to help maintain a charge in the battery. This helps the vehicle get a larger and more eco-friendly mpg. 

kW (kilowatt)

The unit of power used to describe EV batteries.     

kWh (kilowatt-hour)

How many kilowatts (how much power) the EV battery can provide over a period of hours.    

Level 1 charging

For plug-in vehicles, this is the type of charging that most often happens at the vehicle owner’s home. It’s done with a standard 120-volt outlet and can be completed with a charging cord.  

Level 2 charging

Considered fast charging, this uses 240 volts and is often what is found at charging stations that have been specifically installed to accommodate plug-in vehicles. These may be professionally installed at homes as well, and offers about 26 miles per hour of charging. 

Level 3 charging

Currently the fastest level of charging available and can generally power a vehicle’s battery in about 30 minutes. Also known as DC fast chargers, these are usually what you would find at a station. Electrify America’s networks use Level 3 chargers, allowing drivers to get a full battery in only 30 minutes. 

Li-ion

Refers to a lithium ion battery, which is the base for the chemical composition of most EV batteries.  

PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle)

The same idea as a HEV, PHEVs utilize both a battery and gas fuel, but the battery is larger on a PHEV and allows for plug-in charging.    

Range

How far (how many miles) an EV can travel using only power from the battery.   

Range anxiety

Range anxiety is the concern that you might run out of power before reaching your destination while driving your electric vehicle.    

RPH (range per hour)

How much range (mileage) you will get from an hour of charging.

No More Range Anxiety for EVs and Hybrids

A major concern some people have when thinking about purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid is getting where they need to go without running out of power. This is called range anxiety—and it could even prevent someone from considering an EV or hybrid purchase. So, how can they put their mind at ease? It’s time to quell that range anxiety with some important information about what to expect from the mileage capability of today’s electric-powered vehicles.  

Today’s electric range is similar to gas-powered engines

When EVs and hybrids first hit the streets, their batteries weren’t quite as powerful, so range anxiety was something that you might have heard early adopters of the technology discuss. However, today’s more powerful batteries have a lot going for them, including a big boost in mileage capability. As an example, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 has an estimated range of 303 miles per charge. From the same maker, the AWD Hyundai Tucson has an EPA-estimated mileage of 24 mpg for city driving and a 14.3 gallon tank. That means the Tucson range is about 343 miles per tank. That’s only a 40-mile difference!  

Both require refills

Gas-powered vehicles need to be filled with fuel, and EVs and hybrids need to be charged. The bottom line is both need some sort of action to extend their range. With an EV or hybrid, you can do this at home at the end of your day. No need to stop at the pump and refuel. If you happen to be out and about and need to grab a charge, there are many more charging stations than even a few years ago. In Ontario alone there are charging stations all throughout the area.    

Electrify America is working to install fast-charging stations across the U.S., and also has a mobile app to help you locate a station if you’re in an unfamiliar area. Hyundai offers purchasers of the new IONIQ 5 and Kona Electric complimentary two years of unlimited 30-minute charging sessions through Electrify America’s network of chargers. That’s a lot of free mileage!   

Think about your commute

Many of today’s EVs or hybrids give an average range between 220-300 miles per charge (that’s not even tapping into the gas tank with a hybrid). However, most people don’t drive that in an average day. Even with a commute to work and running some errands, you’ll still have plenty of range to get home or to a charging station.  

Don’t Let Range Anxiety Hold You Back

EV and hybrid battery ranges have come a long way since they were first introduced. Don’t let range anxiety prevent you from owning the vehicle you want! With extended ranges and plenty of charging stations throughout the area, you shouldn’t have a problem getting where you need to go with an EV or hybrid.

Living in Southern California means we have access to a lot of beautiful scenery and fun adventures. One of the easiest road trips to a location where there is a lot to explore is none other than a trip to Joshua Tree! 

Joshua Tree National Park is considered unusual due to being where two distinct desert ecosystems meet: the Mojave and the Colorado, providing even more scenic plants and terrain to explore, including Joshua trees themselves. Joshua trees are spiny, tree-like plants that are native to the Mojave Desert. Although they look somewhat like palm trees, they are Yuccas, members of the asparagus family and close relatives of Agave, the plant used to make tequila. These unusual trees create unique scenery and an other-worldly experience for all visitors. 

Planning Your Trip 

When you are planning your trip, one of the first things to decide is if you’re going to enjoy one of the many activities outside of the park, inside of the park, or a little of both!  

if you’re planning to go into the park, make sure you purchase your pass ahead of time. If you are a veteran, senior citizen, disabled, have a national park pass, or are visiting on you won’t need to purchase one. Otherwise, buy an annual pass for the park for around $55, or a private vehicle, motorcycle, or individual pass for a one-time visit.  

If you don’t have time for a long hike, there are several scenic view stops, short walks and nature trails that will still allow any explorer to enjoy the park and soak in the desert landscape. When hiking, always remember to tell someone where you are going, take a map, load up on water and snacks, and wear sunscreen! 

Accommodations 

If you’re ready to camp under the stars, it is highly recommended to make an advance reservation for one of the 500 campsites available in the park. Reservations start booking up to six months in advance, although there is usually more day-of availability for weekday and non-holiday travel dates. 

One of the newest, coolest spaces in Joshua Tree is AutoCamp, where you can rent an airstream or stay in a suite, including accessible suites! The experience includes a Quonset Hut-inspired clubhouse, plunge pool, indoor and outdoor dining, and much more. 

If you’re looking for a full home rental, look no further than Hi Desert Dwellings. The prices often preferable than other home rental websites, and there are a wide variety of homes from rustic to luxurious. 

Lastly, for a unique and historical stay, look no farther than Pioneertown! Built by Roy Rogers in 1946 as Old Western movie star lodging while they were filming on location, the hotel has remained a mainstay with 19 guest rooms and a saloon.  

Where to eat in Joshua Tree

There is much more to see, do and explore in Joshua Tree. This is just a little taste of everything that awaits, no matter what your interest. The most important thing is to enjoy the journey in your car as much as the destination! 

With gas prices hovering near all-time highs, motorists around the country are looking everywhere they can to get a little bit of relief at the pump.  

Stations may vary incrementally on pricing, but the time it takes to find a so-called “good deal” might be better spent with some simple adjustments to your driving behavior. Here are five suggestions that could help you save on gas: 

1. Driving the vehicle at a consistent speed 

Driving at a steady pace near the speed limit is a great way to maximize fuel economy.  When the vehicle does not accelerate, the power is simply equal to the resistance overcome. That’s physics way of saying you should go gentle on the gas pedal and take your time reaching a comfortable cruising speed. The optimal speed at which an engine can be run while consuming the least amount of gas is typically 55-65mph. When driving in the city, you can also try to maintain a constant speed line while navigating city traffic in order to minimize gas consumption. 

2. Avoid tailgating and frequent braking 

Tailgating will result in increased gas consumption. When tailgating, drivers frequently hold the brakes to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them. At the same time, they may press the gas pedal to accelerate before braking. Frequent speed changes use more gas than driving at a safe distance and constant speed. Recurring braking converts gas into excess heat, wasting energy and drastically reducing brake life. Most vehicles will be equipped with new energy-saving systems that convert the heat generated during braking into reusable energy in the future. However, for the time being, this technology has not been extended to single-powered vehicles. 

3. Use the air conditioning system reasonably 

Many people who have been driving for a long time are still perplexed as to how the air conditioning system works. Warm air is generated by the engine’s heat but cold air needs to be made with gas. Some take this into account and open the windows as the car accelerates, but this strategy can backfire as the wind coming into the car can create drag and cause the engine to work harder and burn more precious fuel. 

4. Check tire pressure frequently  

Many drivers are unaware that if the overall air pressure of the vehicle’s tires is balanced, the vehicle can drive smoothly on the road.  As a result, it will not be necessary to overconsume gas. Otherwise, regardless of the driver’s skill level, the vehicle’s gas consumption will be higher than usual. Tire pressure can be monitored manually with a gauge, and most newer cars come with sensors that provide pressure readings in real time. Considering that condensed air is usually free, it’s a no-brainer to take advantage of it and save on gas.  

5. Cleaning and arranging items reasonably inside the vehicle 

To save gas, avoid putting unnecessary items inside the vehicle, which will increase the weight of the vehicle. A tire’s weight can consume an extra liter of gasoline when driving 100 kilometers, especially in the city. If you must load supplies, make sure to place them in the compartment rather than strapping them to the roof rack. Placing items on the roof of the vehicle increases forward resistance and makes acceleration more difficult, increasing gas consumption even more. 

Off-roading is a fun way to blow off some steam and have an adventure, whether solo, or with family and friends. According to AllTrails, there are over 376 places in California to go off-roading. Many of them are in Southern California, thanks to our nearly year-round perfect weather. Whether you plan to take your vehicle for an adventure in the mountains or the desert, there are a few things you can do to prepare for an amazing off-roading adventure.

1. Join the Club 

First, if you are new to off-roading, you may consider having your first experience as part of an off-roading club. Depending on where you are in Southern California and what you’re looking for in a club experience, the California Off-Road Vehicle Association (CORVA) can help find the right club for you! Each club has a different focus; whether its family-oriented, for two or four wheels, location specific, or another factor that has you itching to join, there is a group for everyone. 

2. Pick Your Terrain

AllTrails is a great site to use to find your perfect terrain. Your search can be based on factors such as such as trail difficulty, length, elevation, traffic, route type and other trail attractions such as waterfalls, lakes, forest, hot springs, river, and views. What a great way to experience nature and choose a change of scenery each time! 

3. Check the Weather 

If you’re planning your trip close to the present, double check that the weather will give you an optimal experience. If you’re planning well in advance, check out the Farmers’ Almanac for weather trends for that date, month, and season. For instance, you may not want to go off-roading if there are going to be adverse weather situations that will put a damper on your fun, such as rain, lightning, thunderstorms, or if there is fire danger. Any of these will adversely affect your fun quotient. 

 4. Prepare Your Vehicle 

Not all vehicles are primed and ready to go off-roading. Many factors go into vehicle preparation. Here are a few to keep in mind: 

• If you’re not using an official off-road vehicle (ORV), most trails will accept cars or trucks with four-wheel-drive.  
• Off-road tires are highly recommended, as well as lowering your tire pressure. Reducing tire pressure puts your vehicle a little closer to the ground and can improve traction. 
• Check your ground clearance – if you have a low-riding vehicle, you may want to rent an off-road vehicle or find a friend who has something that will clear brush, rocks, and other natural elements that could cause damage to your vehicle. 
• Check all your fluids and filters to make sure everything is operational and optimal. Brake fluid, engine and transmission oils, coolant, and even how much gasoline you have.  
• Protect your vehicle – some off-roaders advise that you make sure your fuel tank and other parts are protected by plates or other coverings, so that if you do hit a large bump, rock, or other projectile, it is less likely to cause permanent damage. 

 5. Take Emergency Supplies 

While you don’t want to think the worst, it’s important to plan for “just in case” scenarios. Food, water, flashlight, compass/ GPS, chargers, first aid, extra clothing, map, extra fuel are MUSTS at a minimum. If you have space and inclination, you can also bring winches, tow straps such as nylon straps or cables, shovel, and battery jumping cables.  

 6. Tell Someone Where You’re Going 

Make sure someone knows where you are heading to, with whom you are going, and how long you plan to be gone. Have a plan for a check in with your designated contact so that they can be reassured that your adventure went off without a hitch. 

 7. Post- Off-Roading Vehicle Check 

Double check your vehicle after to make sure that there is no internal damage causing fluid leaks or other issues and that your tire pressure is good for highway driving.

We have all experienced the sinking feeling of something going wrong in our vehicles – whether a check engine light goes on, internal displays and audio stop working, a tire is punctured, or any number of issues that affect our ability to safely carry on with our personal and professional lives.  While car dependency is a spectrum, in the United States, most communities are built upon a “car first” or “car only” mentality where we need our cars.  

With ever changing advancements in automotive technology, big changes in telematics, the trend towards electric vehicles, and the imminent retirement of current auto mechanics and technicians, that means one thing.  

Now more than ever, auto technicians are in a hot job market. 

If you love cars, are hands on, and enjoy people, becoming an auto technician may be the right job for you! Currently, there are over 750,000 auto techs and mechanics. To offset retirement and new job openings, over 76,000 new techs are needed each year just to keep up with current demand. 

In general, automotive service technicians and mechanics inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks. While computers now help run diagnostic checks, technicians also work directly on vehicle maintenance, whether general care and an oil change, or repairing or replacing parts. 

Beyond understanding the mechanics and engineering of vehicles, auto techs must have a number of other skills including general industry knowledge, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, good communication skills, and strong work ethics.   

Salaries generally start on the lower end, during training but range from $21,000/ year to $87,000/ year and up depending on how much specialized training a technician has and what types of vehicles they are working on. 

What Training Does an Auto Tech Need? 

While in many states, including California, there is not a formal certification program for auto techs, there are some steps that are highly recommended on this journey. There are a few different options, but with all of them, one piece of advice is to make sure you have a high school diploma or GED. All things being equal, a dealership or repair shop will likely view an applicant with a diploma or GED as someone who has follow through and stability.  

Enrolling in an auto mechanic trade school is a great way to make sure you have the basic knowledge and hands-on training to start your career. This training can take six months – two years depending on the program and certification level. The good thing about trade school programs is that they often include an apprenticeship with a local repair shop or car dealer, allowing a new technician to apply their knowledge immediately and potentially even move into a full-time position. 

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence also offers Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for those with two or more years of experience, that shows employers that you have put in extra effort and often will increase an auto technician’s pay more quickly. With over 40 ASE certifications available, there are a wide variety of auto tech subjects to showcase just what you have learned and impress future employers. 

Some auto techs may decide to forgo trade school and certifications and start with on-the-job training. As vehicles become more complex, this is less and less common, but still a route available with a little bit of research. These positions often start out as part-time and pay minimum wage, but with increased experience can lead to full-time positions and higher salaries after a few years. 

When considering a career as an auto technician, it’s important to note that many auto makers may also require their own certifications to work on their specific makes and models. Receiving these, and other certifications, is a great way to show your eagerness to learn and set you up for further career advancement.

The Car and Driver editors chose 116 different makes and models for their overall Editors’ Choice list, and thankfully for us, narrowed down the categories to the best in two main categories; the best Trucks, SUVS, and Vans; and the best Coupes, Convertibles, Hatchbacks, Sedans, and Wagons.

When surveying all the best options for the Editors Choice list, the editors chose ten that stood out above the rest for value and driving experience. On a 100-point scale, these vehicles, all priced under $90,000, are tested against the previous year’s winners to see how they stack up.

Did you know that the top three selling vehicles in the United States are all pickup trucks? Whether you’ve ever considered the convenience of a truck for more capacity, or prefer a smaller vehicle, this is a year to keep an open mind for your next vehicle purchase, as we examine three of the current trends for pickup trucks in 2022. 

Trend: Compact Trucks 

Since the introduction of the SUV, we’ve seen smaller, compact SUVs become more and more popular. The same trend is now happening with trucks, creating a brand-new market of compact pickup trucks. While current midsize pickup trucks are getting larger, there has been an increase in manufacturers bringing new compact pickup models to market, including recent or soon-to-be-released models from Ford, Hyundai, and Volkswagen to name a few. 

Some of the reasons consumers may look at compact trucks versus SUVs include cargo space, fuel efficiency, and price. However, these are not the previous versions of compact pickup trucks. While current pickups are built body-on-frame construction, newer ones will be built unibody, or in one piece, on car platforms, according to Good Car Bad Car. With 67% of the market open to considering a compact truck over a compact SUV, this is a new truck trend that is sure to heat up. 

Trend: Electric Vehicle (EV) Trucks 

At the end of 2021, approximately 2.5 million vehicles in the United States were electric vehicles. And less than 2000 of those were trucks! This is a serious innovation in trucks that cannot be dismissed, as automakers realize that truck owners still want their spacious, practical rides but EV is also appealing to truck owners. Some of the many reasons as a truck owner to consider EV trucks include: 

•    The average EV produces emissions equal to a gasoline vehicle that gets 88 mpg—significantly better than the 21 mpg for a truck, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.
•    No emissions make EVs healthier for the environment and for you, thanks to less air pollution. Even if your electricity comes from a coal-fired power plant, your carbon footprint will still be smaller.
•    With no moving parts, EVs requires far less maintenance than traditional vehicles, saving you money in the long run. The battery, electric motor, and electronics are mostly hands-off, and you need to replace fewer fluids. Regenerative braking also reduces brake wear.
•    EVs support powered accessories in the vehicle and some new truck models also let you plug in power tools and other equipment.

Two of our favorite contenders if you’re considering an EV truck are the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, and if you are willing to wait, the forthcoming 2024 Ram 1500 EV. 

Trend: Luxury Trucks 

Trucks are often thought of as work vehicles; however, there has been an uptick in luxury trucks – with all the bells and whistles one can imagine. Whether it’s for a smoother and quieter ride, the latest technology, or luxury trimmings such as all leather, chrome, heated and massaging seats, touchscreen infotainment options and upgraded speakers, consumers are waking up to the options that are available in new trucks. 

Brands such as Ram, Ford, Toyota and Nissan are leading the trend for luxury aka “gentleman farmer” trucks. 

While most truck purchases sales in 2022 will still be in the mid-to-full-size range, these are three trends that may give you a reason to consider a truck for your next purchase.

Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition. While many will focus on cleaning their homes, we want to focus on cleaning your vehicle. It’s easy to take pride in your ride when it looks fantastic inside and out.    

Spring Clean Your Vehicle  

Here are a few areas of focus and tips for giving your vehicle a deep clean: 

Exterior
The exterior of your car is what most people think of when they think of cleaning their car. There are a few extra things you can do to take cleaning the exterior of your vehicle to the next level. 

• Clay and wax – If you run your hand over the paint after you have finished washing your car and still feel some small bumps, consider claying and then waxing your car. Clay can help remove impurities from your clear coat and paint and then wax will seal everything up to prevent further damage.  
• Pay attention to the wheels – Sometimes when we wash our car, we think that simply spraying the wheels with water will get them clean. Some major road grime may come off with a simple spray, but if you get down there, you’ll likely see that your wheels are still coated in road and brake dust. Use a separate rag or get a special wheel brush to get those design crevasses spotless.  
• Treat your trim – If you have an older vehicle with dark trim, you might have noticed it has lost its luster. UV rays, rain and other road factors can make this molding dull. You can get some special products to restore those pieces and it will go a long way to keep your car looking nice. 

Interior
You might wonder why cleaning the interior of your vehicle is important. Afterall, no one sees it but you, right? There are a few benefits to keeping your interior clean, and here are a few areas where you might want to focus: 

• Clean out clutter – Open your glove box, center console and trunk and really look through the items that are stored. Does it all need to be in your vehicle? Throw out any trash, then lighten your load by removing any unnecessary items. This can even help improve your gas mileage.   

• Refresh floors – Go the extra step and vacuum your carpets in the front and the back. Take out your floor mats and shampoo them to get all the grime tracked in from your shoes. If you notice some stains on the carpet underneath, shampoo or spot treat those as well. You’ll want to catch these spots before they’re so ground in you can’t remove them. 
• Pamper interior trim – Just like your exterior trim, your interior trim needs to be treated properly. Your front and rear dashboards are especially susceptible to wear and could be showing signs of aging from UV exposure. Take time to treat these areas with special cleaner to keep them looking new. 

Spring Clean Your Vehicle
While many focus their spring cleaning on their homes, it’s valuable to keep your vehicle clean as well. Taking time to address both the exterior and interior of your vehicle will be well worth your time. Not only will it help you keep up the trade-in value of your vehicle, it’s also just nice to have a car that looks good.

The great thing about road tripping in a vehicle with great cargo space like the Ford Expedition is that not only does it have room for all your luggage, but you’ll have plenty of space for a big cooler full of snacks and drinks. Be sure to grab everyone’s favorite beverages such as soda, juice or iced coffee options, but also pack lots of water. Plan a route
Get your road trip route nailed down in advance. Make sure to plan for stops along the way to get out and walk around or take bathroom breaks. You’ll also want to check that no road closures or construction are on your route before hitting the road.
