One of the wonderful things about living in Southern California is that it’s almost always good driving weather! If you feel like you want to get out but aren’t sure where to go, sometimes a simple scenic drive coupled with the right tunes can turn a blah day into something special.

If you’re looking for the perfect drive, check out these options:

Angeles National Forest
There’s nothing quite like a mountain drive, and Ontario is close to a couple great mountain areas. The Angeles National Forest is only about 40 minutes away, and then you can take a lovely trip up highway 39. Stop along the way for some great photos or a hike and a picnic.

San Bernardino National Forest
Another wonderful mountain drive is to the San Bernardino National Forest. Less than an hour up I-15 and you’ll have more fantastic mountain views with fresh mountain air. Roll down your windows for a great breeze while you cruise through some beautiful scenery.

Huntington Beach or Newport Beach
If a coastal drive is more your speed, there are a few routes to take to get to Pacific Coast Highway. The drive to Huntington Beach or Newport Beach will take you over an hour from Ontario, but once you’re there it will be worth it! Travel along the coast listening to the crashing of waves and smell the fresh ocean air. This is another great opportunity to hop out for a quick stroll or find an outdoor picnic spot.

Chino Hills State Park
Right in our own backyard is Chino Hills State Park. A fantastic opportunity for a quick drive with kids, this outdoor area is close to home and offers some wonderful nature and wildlife views right from your vehicle.

No destination
You don’t need a destination to have a great time on a drive. The roads and weather in SoCal were built for cruising with no particular place in mind. It’s easy to hop on a main road or freeway and just give your car a good run. If you’ve got the right music, podcast or audio book, any drive can become something special.

Before you drive

Do a quick road ready check
Before you head out on the open road, it’s a good idea to confirm your vehicle is ready. Make sure you have plenty of fuel, and that your tires are in good shape. It might be a good idea to check your lights as well, especially if you’re going to be out at or past dusk. Finally, be sure you have anything else you need such as drinks, snacks and your mask and hand sanitizer. Just because you’re not planning on getting out of your car, doesn’t mean you won’t, so being prepared is always the best option.

April is National Car Care Month!

Regular maintenance and car care is an important part of vehicle ownership. Setting time aside for some car care can help keep your vehicle in good running order, identify any trouble areas in advance and even potentially reduce future expenses by taking care of any found issues before they become a bigger problem. Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition, and it applies to your car as well!

Here Are Some Spring Car Care Tips to Celebrate

Check and replace wiper blades
You might be thinking this is a waste of time, after all, winter is over. Even if it doesn’t rain, having wiper blades that work is important to ensure you always have the best visibility. If something gets on your windshield you need to be able to clean it off for a clear view of the road.

Check lights
Have someone help you confirm that all your lights are in good working order. This includes front headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals.

Check your oil and get an oil change if needed
Pop the hood and check your oil using the dipstick to assess fill level and degree of wear. If needed, be sure to get an oil change. Newer cars will have an oil life monitoring system with a dashboard alert, but for an older vehicle, you may want to keep track of your months and mileage to follow the maker’s recommendation.

Check tire pressure, tread and sidewalls
Making sure your tires are in good shape is an important safety step. You’ll want to check the tire pressure and if they are low, fill them to the proper PSI. Examine tread depth with the penny test. If your tread is below Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires. Also, look for any abnormal wear on the tread and sidewalls.

Inspect battery
Pop the hood and do a visual examination of your car’s battery. Make sure there are no signs of corrosion (this can look like white or green foam) and that the connections are tight. Be careful not to touch any corrosion or to connect both terminals. If needed, clean off corrosion safely to make sure you’re getting the best performance out of your battery.

Take a peek under the hood
Since you’re here, take a visual inspection of everything under the hood. Do you see any low fluid levels, leaks or rips/tears in your belts or hoses? If you feel comfortable, you can always top off any fluids on your own. Or, if you see something that you think needs attention, you can take it to your service center for help.

Wash and wax
Now that you’ve checked some of the operational items on your car, it’s time to clean! Your paint job will thank you for a thorough wash and wax. If you feel a lot of impurities in the paint, you can also clay your car before waxing. As long as you’re in a cleaning mood, take time to vacuum your vehicle’s interior and clean your windows inside and out with glass cleaner. There’s definitely a feeling of pride that comes with having a good-looking ride.

Did You Know That We’ve Had Hybrid Electric Cars Since 1900?

It’s true! We’ve had hybrid electric cars for over 100 years, and the trailblazing designer of the first hybrid electric vehicle was Ferdinand Porsche (yes, that Porsche). Porsche had been a mechanic in Vienna for about four years when he started designing electric vehicles. He was hired by Hofwagenfabrik Ludwig Lohner & Co in Vienna and in 1900 the first Lohner-Porsche Electromobile was unveiled in Paris. This vehicle was 100 percent electric-powered, but Lohner-Porsche would soon launch their groundbreaking hybrid model.

What is a Hybrid Vehicle?

A hybrid electric vehicle is one that combines the power of gas and electric (battery) energy sources to move the vehicle. Both the gas engine and the battery can be used to power the vehicle completely, partly or the gas engine can simply be engaged to recharge the battery. Many of today’s hybrid vehicles use something called regenerative braking, which harnesses the energy from braking and cycles it back to the main battery. Since hybrid vehicles use less gas, they are generally known for better fuel economy and are better for the environment.

The Lohner-Porsche Hybrid Electric

In 1900, Lohner-Porsche added another vehicle to their line, this time a hybrid electric. The Semper Vivus used two combustion engines and two electric generators, one set over each of the front wheels. This solved one problem of the fully electric vehicles, which is that they had poor range, and would run out of electricity for longer trips. With the combustion engines recharging the electric generators, the vehicles could be taken out for longer trips. However, the combination of the combustion engines and the two electric generators made the vehicle incredibly heavy, which kept it from reaching top speeds.

Model Mixte

With some adjustments and rethinking, the Sempre Vivus became ready for distribution as the Porsche-Lohner Mixte. The Mixte was produced from about 1901 to 1915, and it’s estimated that in today’s dollars one would cost anywhere from $80,000 to $200,000. Even after winning the Exelburg Hillclimb in the large car class the Mixte still had its challenges and was overall considered a failure as far as sales. However, Porsche was approached by the archduke Ferdinand and eventually created what he called“tugs,” which were modified versions of his electric engines to tow large pieces of military equipment to strategic locations during WWI.

New Hybrids

Today’s hybrid electric vehicles are far more successful than the Lohner-Porsches, but these visionaries still brought something incredible to life, leading the path for talented engineers to improve upon their original ideas. One hybrid vehicle that’s got us excited is the new Volkswagen ID.4. It has an EPA estimated range of 250 miles and charges up to 60 miles in about 10 minutes. What is an Extended Warranty and What Does It Cover?

Whether you’re buying new or used, you’ll most likely have the option of purchasing an extended warranty with your vehicle.

What is an Extended Warranty?

An extended car warranty is a safeguard against unexpected maintenance costs after the manufacturer’s standard warranty is expired. It can be a bit of a gamble depending on if you end up needing the coverage. You pay more upfront or in your monthly payments to get that additional coverage in case something goes wrong. If you do end up with unexpected repairs, it can be quite beneficial to have the extension. You may or may not need the coverage in the end, but an extended warranty provides that safety net upfront just in case.

What Does an Extended Warranty Cover?

Here are some of the different types of coverage you might find with an extended warranty:

OEM parts

Most extended warranties will guarantee the use of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. This means if you purchased a Honda, they will use original Honda parts to make repairs instead of aftermarket parts.

Bumper-To-Bumper

These types of warranties will cover almost anything in the car, not everything, but a lot. Coverage can range from something as complicated as the engine or transmission all the way to interior comforts like seat warmers or navigation.

Years or mileage

Many warranties offer limited coverage based on years or mileage, so an extended warranty could simply be an extension of what was originally offered with the vehicle. Meaning, if your original warranty was like Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain, that means everything in the powertrain would be covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. An extended warranty might just add years or mileage to that original warranty.

Areas Of The Car

Some extended warranties are based on certain areas of the car. For example, you may be able to get an extended powertrain warranty, which will cover things like the engine, transmission, and other areas of the drivetrain. However, this won’t cover other things like interior components, air conditioning, or exterior items like clear coat, paint, and body panels.

Who Should Consider an Extended Warranty?

Here are some points to consider when deciding if you should get an extended warranty:

You drive a lot

If you use your vehicle for work or simply drive a lot, you may want to consider an extended warranty as you’ll likely hit the mileage cap much sooner than other buyers.

You plan on having your car a long time

If you love your new ride and you’re planning on driving it for a long time, it might be worth the peace of mind to invest in the extended warranty.

You’re purchasing used

Depending on the used vehicle you select, there could be the tail end of the manufacturer’s warranty still available, but you might want to spring for the extended warranty just to give yourself some more coverage since you’re just getting the vehicle for yourself.

Here are just a few of the steps we’ve taken to ensure that both shoppers and dealership staff is safe during this time:

We’re outside – One of the great things about car shopping is that it’s mostly outside. You can feel free to peruse all different makes and models while completely outdoors. With so much natural ventilation you can feel secure as you wander the aisles.

Mask up – We’re asking everyone to wear masks. Both employees and shoppers are asked to properly cover up while on site. That means wearing a mask that fits properly over your nose and under your chin, while also being made of appropriate materials.

Socially distance – While you’re on the lot, we’ll remind everyone to socially distance from other shoppers. Plus, a little space isn’t bad when you’re checking out your new ride and trying to envision yourself on the open road.

We’ll wave – In order to provide a contactless experience, we’re skipping the handshake in favor of a wave, for now. We can’t wait to get back to our normal practices, but until then we’ll say “hello” from six feet away.

Cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning – We’re wiping everything down multiple times a day! From increased bathroom cleanings to making sure every car that’s opened or test-driven is then wiped down, we’re ensuring the cleanest experience possible. This includes all door handles (interior and exterior), steering wheel, radio, seat adjusters, and anything else you’re likely to touch when checking out a car. This also includes frequently touched surfaces in our offices like desks, counters, doorknobs, and even pens!

Test drives on the honor system – That’s right! You can absolutely test drive a car during this time. In fact, we’re simply going to take a copy of your license and proof of insurance and let you head out on your own. There’s no need to pack a sales associate into the vehicle with you, in fact right now it’s safer if we don’t. You’ll breathe easy and enjoy the ride more knowing you’re not in a tight, enclosed space with someone else.

Plexiglass shields – If you do decide to purchase a car, you can do so safely as we’ve installed plexiglass shields at all our employee desks to ensure you’ve got the protection you need while locking in the best deal available.

Plus, Hyundai now offers the HTRAC® All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) with a multi-mode system. 

The hybrid powertrain is a 1.6-liter turbo gas engine with an electric motor to pump out 226 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It features a 44.2 kW motor and 1.4 kWh battery pack, plus a six-speed automatic transmission. Plug-in hybrid Tucson models have a 1.6-liter turbo engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. However, the battery is much larger than the standard hybrid, with 13.8 kWh of power, producing an all-electric driving range of 28 miles.

2021 Subaru Ascent SUV earns IIHS Top Safety Pick + Award

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the 2021 Subaru Ascent among the 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners. Subaru of America, Inc announced that its full-size, 3-row 2021 Ascent SUV had earned this award due to the addition of Steering Responsive LED headlights with High Beam Assist as standard equipment. Subaru always has its drivers in mind, and this is evident in the 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKS. 

Eight other Subaru models, apart from the 2021 Ascent, received a 2020 IIHS award. These models include the 2020 Crosstrek Hybrid, Forester, Legacy, Outback, Crosstrek, Impreza, and 2020 WRX. Subaru put a lot of work into these vehicles to give them the shot at these awards. According to Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “We view the IIHS awards as validation for our efforts to innovate safety features for our customers continually.” 

IIHS has six crashworthiness evaluations in which all these vehicles earned excellent ratings in them. These evaluations included: 

  • Driver-side small overlap front
  • Passenger-side small overlap front
  • Moderate overlap front strength
  • Moderate overlap side strength
  • Moderate overlap roof strength 
  • Head restraint tests

The passenger-side small overlap front collision evaluation may be a new one for you. This was a new addition to IIHS’ evaluation scheme for 2020. The short overlap tests look to replicate what occurs when there’s a collision of only the front corner of the vehicle with another vehicle or object. The 2021 Subaru Ascent didn’t disappoint; it earned a good rating.  

For the first time, IIHS added pedestrian crash prevention ratings to its awards. The 2021 Subaru Ascent comes standard with the Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. This technology includes the automatic emergency braking system that earns it the ‘Superior’ rating in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and the vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. IIHS believes that rising pedestrian fatalities could reduce as a result of this technology. With the EyeSight, there is no doubt that the 2021 Subaru Ascent earns the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award.
